New York Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell introduced A7600, the Marriage Equality Act, today.
The bill has passed in the Assembly three times since 2007.
O’Donnell said:
“It is with great pride that I am introducing the Marriage Equality Act. Since the Assembly last passed the bill in 2009, there has been an overwhelming groundswell of support for Marriage Equality across our state. Recent poll numbers have shown a strong majority of New Yorkers now stand firmly in support of Marriage Equality. However, nowhere was this powerful belief in equality more clear than at Monday’s ‘Equality and Justice Day’ rally in Albany, where citizens from across our state came together and demanded equality under law in one unified voice.
“Their message is being heard louder and louder, and it is obvious that now, more than ever before, the people cannot, and will not, wait any longer for our government to enshrine equality for all in our state’s
laws. Marriage Equality is now reality in six other jurisdictions; the time has come for New York to break free from this long-standing injustice and retake our position as a nationwide leader in the fight for equality.”Like the previous versions of the Marriage Equality Act, A7600 will establish equal rights, responsibilities, benefits and protections for all married couples, regardless of the sex of the parties to a civil marriage.
The bill also provides that no clergy member or religious institution would be required to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony.
